St. Patrick’s Day | Children Photography | Leprechaun Kisses

Look at this wee shamrock I was lucky to photograph on St. Patrick’s Day! He is the pot of gold at the end of my rainbow! Since Easton was born I have been taking his photo for each holiday and I want to continue this tradition and blog about them. My lucky charm is already 5 months old; time flies! He was not in the mood for photos this day, but I was able to catch a couple Irish smiles. We had a bit o’ fun when mama put on some red lipstick and kissed his delightful cheeks.

May your blessings outnumber
The shamrocks that grow,
And may trouble avoid you
Wherever you go.

Tips For Getting a Great Headshot | Minnesota Headshots

Don’t let your headshots be an epic fail.

Headshots are not just for actors or actresses trying to get a new roll!

Today, it is a way of marketing yourself. You could be a realtor, dentist, entrepreneur or maybe you just want a great Facebook profile image! Headshots play a huge roll in connecting you to your consumers and establish your credibility and put a face with your resume.

This is not about being glamorous, but capturing the real you, because that is who people are connecting with.

How do you prepare for your headshot? Here are some tips for getting a great headshot!

Hire a Professional
Don’t ask a friend who happens to have a “good” camera. And don’t rely on your iPhone to do the job.  Instead, invest in a photographer who has experience taking headshots for many industries. You will want someone who knows how to achieve the ideal lighting for the look you want.

Select the Right Location
Your headshots should reflect who you are and show some personality. Try to avoid shooting in a studio because they will look like every other headshot that has been taken. There are many indoor and outdoor locations in the Twin Cities that allow for a great background, but highlight You!

Wear Something That Suits You
The focal point should be your face, not the neon green shirt you are wearing. Go for classic looks. Do not wear the latest trends because you do not want your photos to be outdated sooner than they should be. Your clothes should reflect your personality and the persona you would like to portray!
Solid colors are best
Plain shirt to start with, then add accessories, such as necklaces or scarves
Bring 2-3 different shirts so you have a selection to pick from
Iron! No wrinkles in clothes are allowed
Lint free zone! Bring a lint roller

Put On Your Best Face (and Hair)
Don’t go the salon and get a brand new hair style, just get a trim. Don’t go overboard with heavy makeup or a new look! Stay with who you are. Be natural and cover up blemishes. During the shoot, add more (or darker) makeup as the session goes on. The night before, exfoliate your lips with a sugar & olive oil scrub to remove dead skin. Avoid looking like an Oompa Loompa by not over tanning or extensive exfoliating the night before. Men: Avoid the 5 o’clock shadow by shaving right before the session. If you can afford one, hire a hair stylist and makeup artist that can stay with you during the shoot. PS – I know a great one!

Don’t Be Nervous
Don’t be afraid of the lens. You want to make a personal connection to your audience, so make eye contact and be confident. Think of it as meeting someone for the first time.

Prepare Before The Shoot
Bring extra makeup and moisturizer to the shoot for touch-ups
Females: Bring gloss for shine
Males: Bring lip balm for soft lips
Bring a brush and hair products to help with fly-aways
Style your hair down and then we can pull it back for a casual look
Determine what side is your “better side”
Practice your expressions and smiles in the mirror
Prepare some songs on a playlist to help you get comfortable during the shoot

Don’t Forget To Update Your Headshots
Obviously, you don’t want to use the same headshot on your website, LinkedIN profile or in your portfolio 20 years down the road. You will want to get your headshots retaken every couple years to stay relevant and fresh.

Polar Plunge 2015 | Client Philanthropy

Normally I blog about photography session that I have taken, but this time I wanted to feature the philanthropy of one of my favorite clients; Tamara!  I have worked with Tamara and her family for a number of years. We photographed newborn sessions of both of her children, a maternity session and a family session.

This past weekend Tamara and her husband, Mark, did something amazing! They teamed up with the Black Knight Financial Services Polar Plunge Team, Tamara’s work team, and took the plunge into freezing Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis.

Watch their video below!

Each year, the Polar Plunge challenges thousands of courageous jumpers at a number of different locations around Minnesota. Individuals, organizations and businesses get involved in supporting Special Olympics Minnesota. All funds raised by plungers goes towards programming and events for more than 8,000 athletes statewide.

Black Knight Financial Services accepted that challenge and braved the Minnesota elements: Minnesota Nice meets Minnesotan Ice! They had 18 plungers participate this year and raised $13,988! In the past they had bigger teams, but their company made a $10,000 donation to help them meet their fundraising goal!

At 40 degrees, it was a perfectly “warm” day to participate, as opposed to last year when we were in negative temperatures. When you watch the video below, pay attention to the female in the first group who does the belly flop; that is Tamara!

Tamara commented that the Plunge organizers have always treated them so wonderful! Every single one of them thanks each plunger and tells them how much they appreciate the continued support year after year. Tamara and her team got to meet some athletes and talk about how the Special Olympics changed their lives.

“Every year I think I’m more excited to start putting together our team for the next year!” commented Tamara.

Maybe next year I will head out with her to take some photos!

If you would like to donate, please visit her fundraising page.

Aoife | Rosemount Baby Photography | Radiance

Aoife is an Irish feminine given name derived from the Gaelic aoibh, which means “beauty” or “radiance”.  Her parents selected the perfect name for this beauty! When I first saw her name in an email I had to do a Google search to figure out how to pronounce it.  Click here for the pronunciation.
Aoife turned 6 months this winter and she was so happy and glowing that she looks like she has a summer radiance. While we were at her house, we discovered her love for pearls! Watch out daddy, she has expensive taste! Her adorable older brother joined her session which resulted in some kisses, hair-pulling and cuddles in Aoife’s crib.  Her nursery also has a bright radiance, which shows through her sunshine walls.

I am excited to work with her and her family again this summer! Stay tuned!

Easton | Rosemount Newborn Photography | Miracle

This blog, believe it or not, was the hardest one to write. Why? Well because Easton is my first child and there was so many emotions running though my head that I didn't know where to start! Newborn photography is a privilege and when the newborn is your own, well, that is just extra special.

Baby Easton was born on October 6th, 2014. What, he is already 5 months old? Where did the time go? Oh, that’s right – I was spending every second I could with this sweet little boy.

One bonus of living with the “subject” is that I get to walk downstairs to my studio whenever he is asleep. So, lets just say that this session was one of the longest sessions I have ever done. I wanted to use every prop I had and snap every pose I could think of, but settled for just a few.

My October pumpkin slept like a champ in his basket and the wooden bed handmade by my step-dad. He has the sweetest little cheeks and the little Paulus eyes. He definitely will be mama’s boy for life! We even found a way to incorporate some hockey into the session for daddy’s little champ. We received the knitted hockey skates from a family friend at one of my baby showers. So cute!

You're my life's one Miracle,
Everything I've done that's good
And you break my heart with tenderness,
And I confess it's true
I never knew a love like this till you....

When you smile at me, I cry
And to save your life I'll die
With a romance that is pure heart,
You are my dearest part
Whatever it requires,
I live for your desires
Forget my own, needs will come before
Who could ever love you more?

Well there is nothing you could ever do,
To make me stop, loving you
And every breath I take,
Is always for your sake
You sleep inside my dreams and know for sure
Who could ever love you more?

Mirtica | Graffiti Family Photography | Griffiti Bridge

Hello again Mirtica family!

Mikelynn is one of our repeat clients and we love that she keeps coming back to see us!

The first session was with her oldest son, Tony for his senior photos. Then in 2014 we worked with her other son, Dante, for his senior shoot. This time she reached out to Honeybee for her downtown family photography. She was looking for a grungy, hip location so we headed to a couple of our favorite locations, including graffiti bridge. The ever-changing displays of graffiti make for a very vibrant, loud, rock star-like photos. They loved their graffiti photography family session and loved the colorful urban edge.

Everyone wants to find Graffiti Bridge, but you only get these photos from Honeybee!
